We are having a nice low key visit in El Paso. Monday was spent swimming.
Levi still tries to get his reading time in, but the swimming might be wearing him out a bit. |
Tuesday Kyle and I went for breakfast at Delicias Cafe. This has become a little tradition for us. We get a little time without kiddos and the food is amazing. They even serve chips and salsa with your breakfast. I usually get the Huevos Delicias. It is a quesadilla (corn tortilla) topped with two eggs and tamatillo and Serrano pepper sauce.
Wednesday Gram and Poppy took the kids to the movies, while Kyle and I stayed home with Emilia. Kyle also went to lunch with his brother in law at Kiki's. This spot has been featured on Food Network by Aaron Sanchez. Kyle said it was very good.
Thursday we took Landon, Elaine, and our niece Maddie to the El Paso Holocaust Museum. It was very well done and we all learned something. I would definitely recommend it, but would caution taking children under age 8 due to the subject matter. It is easy to tour as there are videos that walk you through the exhibit.
One video we didn't have the children watch as it had a specific warning about the appropriateness of the content for younger audiences. I just walked the three kids into the next section before the video began.
The exhibit prompted lots of great discussion and included lots of visuals.
We have been reading the story of Corrie Ten Boom and how she and her family aided the Jews. Landon has also been interested in this time period for awhile, checking out books from the library and watching Hunting Hitler. This fit in perfectly. I now want to reread The Diary of Ann Frank, Number the Stars, and Night.
Friday night we headed to White Sands, New Mexico. It is like being at the beach without the ocean or playing in the snow with shorts on instead of snow suits. You can sled on the dunes, and we always have lots of fun. This evening a thunderstorm rolled in, so we only got about 15 min of sledding and no pictures.
Saturday Landon, Elaine, Levi, Kyle, and Poppy played Monopoly, we had lunch at Kiki's and then did some swimming. Today we went to church and then had Grandma Phyllis over for lunch. We had a nice visit with her. She "adopted" the Carnahans when they lived in El Paso the first time and the kids were little. It is always fun to catch up with Grandma Phyllis.
